Recently, on 30th June, 2020, Magento announced Magento 1 End of Life (EoL). You need not stop dead in your tracks as the development isn’t something out of the blue! When Magento had released Magento 2 in 2015, the Adobe company had simultaneously set the stage for putting an end to Magento 1. It was in September 2018, when Magento had begun withholding updates to their M1 software. In fact, along with Adobe, Visa and Mastercard payment processors, had made a final attempt in June to push eCommerce shop owners for updating their online platforms.

From the time Magento has taken the bold step, many of the e-stores running on Magento 1 have been flooding the internet with innumerable questions like how will Magento 1 EoL affect their business? What will happen if they continue to use M1? How to migrate from Magento 1 to Magento 2? How to swiftly and smoothly do the re-platforming? And the list goes on.

Steady your nerves! All your queries will be answered in the following blog.

What exactly do they mean when they quote the words – Magento 1 End of Life (EoL)?
In simple terms, Magento 1 (EoL) means that Magento has removed the support system for M1 software after 30 June, 2020. From the aforesaid date, the Adobe company has stopped providing quality fixes, support, and security patches for Magento 1.

What will you lose if your eStore continues to operate from Magento 1?
The security of your eStore is compromised – Magento releases security patches when developers discover vulnerability in the system. Since your store is no longer supported by security updates from Magento, it becomes a soft target for hackers. You are inviting serious threat to your site and your customers’ data. If a hacker breaks into your outdated security, it will not just hamper your market reputation but your lifelong efforts and huge financial investment will meander down the drain as well.

Finding developers for Magento 1 becomes challenging – As they say, “Change is the only constant”, to stay in competition, one has to adopt change. By the same token, Magento developers are shifting their focus to Magento 2 skill enhancement. There will come a time when you will either find none or a fingerful of M1 developers, and those numbers will gradually fade away as well. Therefore, finding support for your conventional M1 store will become next to impossible. Even if you do, for minor updates the developer will cost a bomb, which otherwise would be taken care of by Magento, provided you are on Magento 2.

An aging platform will reduce the life of your business – If your system is over the hill, it is better to get rid of it. Outdated systems lose you both time and money. Staying with Magento 1 means you will be fostering it rather than fostering your sales. To make things worse, neither will you receive the latest updates by Magento nor will the extensions to third-party systems that you are presently depending on will function in the near future.

Losing payment provider means losing business – If your store is still nestled on Magento 1, you will not be able to comply with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards (PCI DSS), resulting in non-compliance fines. Since M1 is no more PCI compliant, your site is insecure and any payment provider would hesitate in offering support to it. As a result, you will lose business and your customers will lose trust in you.

The fact that Magento 1 is breathing its last, doesn’t mean your business is doomed. Like a snake sheds away its old skin and dons a fresh one, similarly, you have to undergo a digital transformation that will have a positive effect on your business growth in times to come. All in all, migration from Magento 1 to Magento 2 is inevitable!
